The change in seasons marked a change in maintenance and upkeep of one's house during the 19th century. To protect against the sweat, dirt, and insects that accompany a humid New Castle summer, the Read family would have prepared their house for Summer Dress. Servants would drape slipcovers over the nice furniture, to preserve a clean appearance. Fireplace and lighting implements would be stored away because they were seldom used during the summer months. Instead, doors and windows might be opened for a cool breeze. Unfortunately, this enabled insects to enter the house. Gauze would therefore be used to cover mirrors and frames to protect against fly specks. Enjoy this sneak peek at the current Summer Dress exhibit! Now through September 14, 2005 at
