America’s
trading relationship with China goes back to the country’s early
days, when the China trade provided many of the luxury goods,
such as tea, silk, and porcelain, that the citizens of the new
nation coveted. After the Revolution, American merchants were
finally able to establish their own independent trading networks
and reap huge profits from what became a thriving international
trade.
“Delaware
and the China Trade,” the latest exhibit at the Read House,
looks at how Delawareans benefitted from the China trade and
showcases a variety of eighteenth and nineteenth-century objects
from our collections. The exhibit also looks at how the China
trade worked from a trader’s perspective by focusing on the life
of William Couper, a China trade merchant from New Castle and
the second owner of the Read House.
