Steppin’ Out...Under the Stars, the current exhibition at the Delaware History Museum, asks what a night out on the town means to you. Is it flashy, flirty, swinging, and dancing to a good beat? Or do you envision the promise of elegance, glamour, and sophistication? Some look forward to a night at the theater, while others seek out a bouncing band and hopping dance floor. Either way, Steppin’ Out is something to which we can all relate. For most of its history, downtown Wilmington has been the focus for Delawareans’ nights out.

From the opening of the Indian Queen Hotel in 1789 at 5th and Market streets on the same site as the new World Cafe Live which opened its doors this spring, our block has been one of Delaware’s most energetic, hip sites. But we’re focusing on the elegant balls, celebrations, jazz clubs, theaters, and hot dance and party spots throughout town. We think it’s time to celebrate that sparkling history and remember when we put on our best clothes to become the most spirited and most fun versions of our selves.

Take a look at what we wore, where we went, and become better acquainted with the talented musicians and performers that have called Delaware home. Learn about Harold "3 Gun" Wilson whose job it was to keep Wilmington dry during Prohibition. View a spectacular fashion time line of gowns. Step out and revisit or rethink the city that we call home. Join us as we turn up the volume, put on the glitz and take a dressed-up, good-natured strut through time.
