Since the 1870s, Delawareans have shared in the mixed joy and drudgery
of sending holiday cards. Season's Greetings, on
display in the Willingtown Square Gallery of the Research Library from
November 24 to December 29, 2000, displays a wide range of holiday
greetings from the Society's collections. Featured are typical
cards from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many have images that
do not seem like Christmas or New Year's to us today, but they were
popular in their own time, and remind us that even cherished holiday
traditions do change. The exhibit also includes cards by Delaware
artists and cards sent by notable Delawareans. Finally the exhibit
pays tribute to Emily Bissell and the Christmas seal, Delaware's
contribution to the holiday ritual, which will be featured in December's
Collection's Highlight.
