Position Description
Title:           Visitor Services Assistant

Reports to:     Public Relations Coordinator

Status:            Part-time, hourly, Tuesday-Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m., Sat, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Summary:       Visitor Services Asst. Manager is responsible for assisting in day-to-day operations during public hours at the Delaware History Museum and Gift Shop.

Primary Duties:

  1. Assists with all opening and closing procedures for the Delaware History Museum and Gift Shop, including alarms, security cameras, lights and preparing galleries, gift shop, and bathrooms for the public.
  1. In a support capacity to the Visitor Services Manager, the Visitor Services Assistant is responsible for visitor services, including greeting visitors upon arrival, enforcing admission policies, providing information, and directing guests to other parts of the organization when necessary. Assists in maintaining daily visitor records and reports problems with visitors to appropriate staff members.
  1. Operate the cash register and credit card machine for admissions and gift shop, record inventory numbers for gift shop, and handle all tour, program, and gift shop income appropriately.
  1. Understands and assists in the basic operation of and monitoring technology in exhibits, including but not limited to televisions, monitors, VCRs, audio visual equipment and computers.
  1. Provide basic security support by alternating with Visitor Services Manager in periodic walk-through of exhibit galleries.

 

Other Duties:

  1. Responsible for basic exhibit cleanliness, and daily walk-through of exhibit spaces. A exhibit maintenance checklist is completed, reviewed and filed with the Director of Museum Programs.
  1. Check restrooms daily and re-supply as necessary during hours when museum is open
  1. Assist with special events and evening programs and clerical work as needed

 

 Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public
  • Ability to handle money and basic finances
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Enthusiasm and interest in Delaware history
  • Flexibility to learn new and varying procedures for changing exhibits

 

 Other Job Requirements:

  • Must report promptly and reliably for all scheduled work days
  • Must maintain a professional appearance including appropriate dress and personal grooming.  Must display supportive, inclusive conduct toward visitors of all nationalities, ages, races, and genders
  • Work effectively in a people-centered, customer-service oriented atmosphere
  • Language and speaking skills appropriate in a business setting
  • Must be able to climb ladder to deal with security alarms and gift shop shelves
  • Must possess physical and manual dexterity to operate all equipment as mentioned above
  • Work on evening and weekend hours is required
